# Setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Add an extra layer of security to your account by setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA). Once set up, we’ll ask for a 6-digit code generated by your authenticator app each time you log in to Canva to verify it’s you.

###### Quick tip

Set up multi-factor authentication for your account now from your Settings.

MFA isn’t available for SSO-managed Accounts, and can only be set up for accounts with a password. To set up a password, go to Settings > Login > Password.

Before proceeding as well, verify your account first. Check your email account for the confirmation email.

We're rolling out navigation changes gradually, so some steps in this Help article may not accurately reflect what you see in the app. If you can't find **Canva AI**, your profile photo, or your Print cart on the homepage, go to **More**.

### Set up Authenticator App

01. On the homepage, select your profile icon to open the menu.
02. Select **Settings**.
03. Go to **Login**.
04. Under the **Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)** section, next to the **Authenticator app**, select **Enable**.
05. Enter your password, and click **Confirm password**.
06. Using your preferred authenticator app, scan the **QR code** image shown on the screen. You can also select the **Show secret key** and copy the code displayed to your authenticator app when adding an account.
07. Enter the 6-digit code generated by your authenticator app. Each code only lasts 30 seconds, so make sure to use the most recent one.
08. Select **Enable authenticator app** to proceed.
09. In the next window, select **Copy codes** and store them somewhere safe. You can use these codes if you ever lose access to the MFA factor you just enabled.
10. Select **Finish set up** to complete your MFA setup.

### Generate backup codes

In case you lose access to your multi-factor authentication options, you can use **backup codes** to log in to your account instead. Each code **can only be used once**. You can generate new backup codes if you’ve used them all or lost them.

1. On the homepage, select your account profile to open the menu.
2. Choose **Settings**.
3. Select **Login**.
4. Under the **Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)** section, look for **Backup codes**.
5. If you've used up all your backup codes or haven't set them up before, select **Generate**. If you've lost your old backup codes or want to create new ones, select **Regenerate**.
6. Once generated, new backup codes will appear. Select **Copy codes** and store them somewhere safe.
7. Select **Finish set up** to finish.

### Turn off Multi Factor Authentication

1. On the homepage, select your account profile to open the menu.
2. Choose **Settings**.
3. Select **Login**.
4. Under the **Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)** section, next to the **Authenticator app** or **SMS Verification**, select **Disable**.

## Set up SMS verification

As of June 5, 2023, Canva **no longer supports** setting up SMS Verification.

### If I already have SMS Verification enabled, will it still continue to still function?

Yes, if you’ve previously set up SMS Verification and still have it enabled, it will continue to function as normal.

### Can I still disable SMS Verification?

Yes, if you have SMS Verification already enabled, you can still disable it.

### I currently have SMS Verification set up. Can I disable and then reenable it again, or change the phone number I have set up for it?

No. If you disable SMS Verification, you can’t re-enable or set it up again. This also means you can’t change the phone number registered for SMS Verification.

### Why did you remove the ability to set up SMS Verification?

SMS Verification is less secure than other multi-factor authentication options. We recommend the use of Authenticator App instead.

## Login verification issues

If you're having trouble with login verification (MFA), try the solutions below.

### Not receiving a code from authenticator app

### Cause

This can happen if your device time is not synced correctly, the authenticator app or device is not working as expected, the account setup in the app is incorrect, or the app is outdated.

### Fix

- Check your device’s date, time, and time zone settings, and make sure they are set to update automatically. Authenticator codes rely on accurate time synchronization.
- Restart the authenticator app, or restart your device to clear temporary issues.
- Make sure your Canva account was added correctly in the authenticator app and that you are using the correct account entry.
- Update the authenticator app to the latest version available.
- If the issue continues, uninstall and reinstall the authenticator app, then set up login verification again in your Canva account settings.

If your authenticator app is still not generating codes after trying these steps, contact the authenticator app’s support team directly for further help.

### Still not receiving a verification code from your authenticator app?

If you’ve tried the steps above and your authenticator app still isn’t generating a code, [contact us to get help.](/content/help/report-login-issues/index.html)

## “The code you entered is incorrect” error

### Cause

The code may have expired, or your device time may be out of sync. Authenticator codes change every 30 seconds.

### Fix

- Open your authenticator app and wait for a new 6-digit code to appear.
- Enter the latest code immediately before it refreshes.
- If the error continues, check that your device’s date and time are set correctly and synchronized automatically, then try logging in again.

## Can’t see multi-factor authentication options in Login settings

### Cause

You may not have a password set on your account, or your organization manages login through single sign-on.

### Fix

- If you signed up using Google, Facebook, or another login method, reset your password to create one. Once a password is set, login verification options will appear in your account settings.
- If you use single sign-on through your organization, password and multi-factor authentication options are managed by your organization and cannot be changed in Canva.

## Can’t see the SMS authentication option

### Cause

SMS authentication is no longer supported for new setups.

### Fix

- Set up login verification using an authenticator app instead.
- If you are in Australia, Canada, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, or the United States and previously set up SMS authentication, you can continue using it until you deactivate it. Once deactivated, it cannot be set up again.
